Witch Hazel Herbs are a genus of 4 species, two of which are native to North America the others being in China and Japan. Witch Hazel shrubs and plants are deciduous with small broad leaves.

The Witch Hazel tree or shrub is unique in that the fruit, flowers and next year’s buds all can be found on the plant together at the same time.

So what is Witch Hazel?

Witch Hazel is often chosen as ornamental garden shrubs due to its rich colored flowers that begin to bloom in autumn and continue into winter. The extract of the bark and leaves, also called Witch Hazel, or astringent wich hazel and has been used to treat bruising and wounds through history.

Parts of the plant are also made into witch hazel oil for topical treatment for skin irritations.

Witch Hazel herb tea is prepared by steeping 1 teaspoon dried herb in 8 ounces of boiling water for 10 minutes.

Witch Hazel is often an ingredient in soothing pads used for hemorrhoids and episiotomies.

Witch Hazel has been used to treat insect bites and sooth skin irritations. You can even make home made baby wipes with witch hazel.

A witch hazel oral rinse is often made to sooth irritated gums and a sore mouth.

The seeds of the Witch Hazel are edible.

Witch Hazel is used in soaps, lotions, aftershaves and other cosmetic products.

Witch Hazel can be used internally to treat prolapsed uterus and varicose veins.

A teaspoon of strong Witch Hazel tea with a drop of Clove oil and a drop of Myrrh can be used to sooth swollen gums associated with teething.

Witch Hazel has a styptic effect and can help control bleeding.

Excessive use of large doses of Witch Hazel taken internally can cause intestinal irritation and possibly liver damage; however there are no documented cases yet.
