The state herb of Main, Wintergreen herb, grows in wooded and meadow areas from Canada down to Georgia.

Wintergreen plants offer an attractive ground covering with shiny dark leaves and white bell shaped flowers and produces bright red berries near winter.

Today Wintergreen is used as a flavoring for gums, candies and toothpastes; however the traditional use by Native Americans were medicinal. Wintergreen can still be used medicinally and is available as essential wintergreen oil, dried herb, tinctures and teas.

Wintergreen plants, and wintergreen berries, are actually called by many names depending on where you live. Here are a few of the alternate names:

Wintergreen Tea

Wintergreen tea is prepared by steeping 1 ounce dried herb in 1 pint of boiling water for 10 minutes.

Wintergreen Uses & Herbal Remedies

Crushed leaves of the Wintergreen plant can be applied to sprains and bruises to help ease swelling and pain.

Wintergreen tea helps ease stomach discomfort and indigestion as well as sore throats.

Mild Wintergreen tea has been used to treat headaches in children.

Wintergreen oil can be used with a carrier oil to be massaged topically to treat rheumatism, painful muscles and joints as well as bruising and sprains. Wintergreen oil is not to be ingested.

Wintergreen Berries

Wintergreen berries are bright red in color and are edible. They are often used in any recipe that calls for berries. Added to muffins, pies, and scones, they are actually really tasty.

Wintergreen oil is not intended for internal use and can result in serious afflictions including death.

Some reports suggest that the use of a drug called Walfaring should not be taken with Wintergreen.
