Tea Turns Murky - Cloudy Tea

by Cathy
(Hermiston,Oregon)

Tea Question
When I make tea with boiled water it always turns murky.
YUK!!!! How do I make tea that is clear looking, except for the tea color?

Answer
Thanks for the question. It sounds like you may have a couple of problems. To sort this out, you can try a couple of things to get a nice clear cup or pot of tea.

First it could be the quality of water you are using to make your tea. Are you using tap water? Perhaps it is low quality, or has additives for purification in your local water system. Try using bottled water. This can make a world of difference to the quality of your tea. Water quality is huge when it comes to making a great cup of tea.

If that isn't it, perhaps it is the type of tea you are making. Some herbal teas do make cloudy or murky looking tea if the herb is too fine and doesn't steep but actually mixes into the water while steeping. So, if you are using tea leaves, make sure that they are high quality and not tea dust (often found in commercial tea bags) this makes a murky tea - or using herbs that are not prepared for tea making, but ground too fine and are great for other uses, just not steeping.

Last don't stir the tea - you have to let it steep, no stirring!! Some people like to stir, but it will release dust and sediment into the tea.

I hope one of these suggestions helps you to get a nice clear great tasting cup of tea.

Good Luck,

Teya
