Google

Stinging nettle is an old stand by when it comes to herbal remedies. It goes by the name nettle, nettle leaf and Urtica Dioica.

Nettles grow wild in many parts of the world including Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America.

They were once a main stay food source for indigenous people of the various areas. The young tender leaves of nettles taste like spinach and can be used in any recipe that calls for spinach leaves.

Nettle Tonic

Nettle Tea A tonic made from the leaves is also used in many herbal hair products to promote a healthy shine and eliminate dandruff.

Once used to prevent scurvy, nettle leaf and the roots of the nettle plant are very nutritious.

High in vitamins A, C, D, K iron, potassium, manganese, and calcium this is a very beneficial herb.

They are perennial and return in abundance year after year, spreading by their root system and sending up new shoots every spring.

Harvesting Nettles

If you are going to harvest your own nettles, they get the name "stinging" because the leaves and stem of the plant, which can reach 2-4 feet high, are covered in little hairs that sting the skin when touched. You need to wear gloves when harvesting the leaves, and digging the roots.

Do not harvest nettle leaves after the plant has flowered, they become grainy and can upset the urinary tract.

Myself, I have an allergic reaction to the toxicity of the plant and swell up fast if I have touched a nettle plant.
