Skullcap’s proper name is Scutellaria and is a large genus of herbaceous plants widespread in temperate regions around the world.

Skullcaps are found in wooded areas as well as along roadsides and generally are flowering plants. The flowers of the Skullcap are often a bluish purple and are tubular with a hood and lower lip.

Skullcaps are traditional medicinal plants that have medicinal purposes today as well. Native Americans used Skullcaps for several ceremonial purposes including bringing a girl to womanhood; due to its ability to bring on menses.

Skullcap was also used to bring visions and once used to treat rabies and schizophrenia.

Skullcap tea is prepared by steeping 1 ounce of powdered herb in 1 pint of boiling water for 10 minutes. This is to be taken in ˝ teacup doses every few hours.

Skullcap has been used in the treatment of mental and nervous disorders such as epilepsy, hysteria, DT’s, and ADD.

Skullcap can be used to bring on menstruation.

Skullcap has been effective in treating arthritis, especially when it is aggravated by stress.

Skullcap Cautions

Skullcap should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Excessive amounts of Skullcap can have adverse reactions such as stupor or giddiness and twitching.

Excessive and casual use of Skullcap can cause liver damage and caution should be taken.

As with any herbal remedy or tea, you should only administer these remedies with the aid of a trained medical practitioner and take precautions.
