Potassium in Black Tea

There is potassium in black tea ! Enjoy the benefits of black tea and increase your potassium level - potassium is an essential minerial and deficiencies can cause electrolyte imbalances within our bodies.

As an essential mineral, potassium is a requirement of all cells in any living thing and being difficient in potassium can cause heart problems along with a variety of other conditions affecting many parts of the body. Potassium is found in many electrolyte drinks - sports drinks.

There are several recommendtaions for daily intake of potassium, but one study concluded that 4000mg of potassium per day was a standard adult dose.

You can obtain potassium through a normal and varied diet, but some foods contain more potassium than others.

Foods High in Potassium

Bananas are one of the more common foods that are high in potassium as are nuts, potatoes, parsley, bran, avocados, and black tea.

Black Tea Benefits

There is a substantial amount of potassium in high quality black tea. The higher the quality of black tea, the more potassium will be available to be absorbed. One standard 8 ounce cup of black tea contains about 80-100 mg of potassium. Compare that to a banana which has 400mg.

Potassium helps to balance ph in our bodies - keeping everything in check and helps regulate blood pressure, is required for muscle growth and brain function.

Green tea also contains potassium but at a lesser amount - a cup of green tea has about 40-60mg of potassium depending on the quality and strength of the tea.

I think that this is one of the reasons that tea actually quenches your thirst - potassium helps you to hydrate your body, and not retain fluid.
