Pomegranate is a fruit bearing shrub or small tree that is native to the Middle Eastern regions of Afghanistan, Iran and the Himalayans; however, it has been naturalized all over the Mediterranean. The Pomegranate has been given a lot of attention recently and was declared a super food for its nutritive and medicinal value.
Pomegranate fruit looks much like a standard fruit from the outside but is actually a berry. The outside of the fruit has a thick rind that is usually red while the inside of the Pomegranate contains many edible seeds surrounded by a pulp. The desired seed of the Pomegranate can best be separated from the skin and white supporting structures in water where the seed will float to the top. Pomegranate fruit is used in beverages and in culinary dishes.
The Pomegranate is featured in many folklore and myths including Christian, Jewish and Greek mythologies.
