Pennyroyal is a member of the mint family and the essential oil is cultivated and used in aromatherapy. Pennyroyal traditionally was used as a poison and a means to cause abortion in early pregnancy. The Pennyroyal essential oil, the part most commonly used, is highly concentrated and is then very toxic and ingesting even small amounts can cause death.

Pennyroyal is found naturalized in most parts of the world and is the smallest of the mint family and very different than all other members. A tincture of Pennyroyal can be used internally as a tea in controlled amounts for medicinal purposes.

Pennyroyal tea can be prepared by steeping 1 ounce dried herb in 1 pint of boiling water for 5 minutes. The over use of Pennyroyal internally can be dangerous and cautions should be made.

Dried Pennyroyal has been used as a natural flea repellant when used in pet bedding, kennels and entryways.

Pennyroyal tea has been used to treat colds and respiratory ailments. The tea has also been used to treat stomach upset and to bring on menstruation.

Pennyroyal oil can be used as an insect repellant, is used in aromatherapy to treat congestion, colds and whooping cough. Place the oil in your infuser and feel the soothing effects.

Pennyroyal Cautions & Dangers

Pennyroyal essential oil is toxic and not intended for internal use; death could result if ingested.

Excessive and prolonged use of Pennyroyal taken in any form internally can cause liver damage and or death.

Pennyroyal is should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Although once used to cause abortion Pennyroyal is not suggested for this use and deaths have occurred from attempting to use Pennyroyal in this way.
