Oregon Grape is an evergreen shrub closely related to the Barberry and contrary to its name is in no way related to Grapes. Oregon Grape derives its name from the purple clusters of berries it produces and the state flower of Oregon actually blooms on this shrub. Similarly to Barberry, Oregon Grape is often used in landscaping and is considered to be a low maintenance shrub that can withstand diverse conditions.
Oregon Grape has similar medicinal attributes share with Goldenseal and due to the threat related to over harvesting of Goldenseal Oregon Grape is becoming an alternate to Goldenseal in many uses.
