Mangosteen, known as the queen of the tropical fruits, is an erect tree that is slow growing and bears dark reddish purple fruit.
The fruit has a thick rind and a white sectioned inner flesh that is juicy and soft. The origins of the Mangosteen is unclear, however, it is cultivated widely in Thailand.
Mangosteen is a very tropical tree and cannot withstand very cold nor very hot conditions. It was attempted to be grown in Hawaii and California but has not been very successful, Florida’s soil was not suitable for cultivation of the Mangosteen and other regions have deemed the Mangosteen as not worth the trouble.
Mangosteen juice is readily available in many health food or alternate medicine stores and is used to treat many ailments and as a preventative tonic that can be used by the entire family.
Mangosteen tea is generally made from the dried rind of the Mangosteen fruit. The dried and sliced rind is steeped in hot water overnight and then can be drunk as a tea.
