Ma Huang Herb
Ma Huang, a cone bearing shrub, is a Chinese name given to the plant known as Ephedra and has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years to treat respiratory conditions. Ma Huang or Chinese Ephedra, became popular in the United States for uses in diet and energy and was used in larger doses. Due to the over use and higher dosages of Ma Huang and other names given to Ephedra there were many serious health related problems and even deaths and Ephedra containing supplements have since been banned in the United States.
Two of the chief components in Ma Huang, or Ephedra are ephedrine and pseudoephedrine which act as a stimulant and thermogenic and is used in treatment of respiratory ailments and decongestants and has also become an ingredient in the production of methamphetamine.
Ma Huang Tea
Ma Huang tea is prepared by steeping ¼ - ½ teaspoons dried herb in 8 ounces of boiling water for 10 minutes.
Ma Huang Uses & Herbal Remedies
Ma Huang has traditionally been used as a treatment for respiratory ailments such as asthma or bronchitis but can be used to relieve cough associated with colds as well.
It is a very effective and powerful weight loss aid. Extreme caution must be used when using this herb for weight loss.
Ma Huang can be used to treat both chest and nasal congestion.
Ma Huang Cautions
Excessive use of Ma Huang can cause dizziness, irregular heartbeat, seizures, strokes and death.
Ma Huang is discouraged during pregnancy, breastfeeding and by persons with high blood pressure or heart disease.
Ma Huang should not be used as an energy booster, sports or diet aid or in combination with any stimulant such as caffeine.
Ma Huang is not considered a safe herb and strict caution should be made when taking Ma Huang.
