Juniper Herb

Juniper, also called Gin Berry, is a small shrub that is native to most of the northern hemisphere and grows to about 5 feet tall. The Juniper plant produces berries which is what is used most often including an ingredient in Gin. The berry of the Juniper takes about 2 years to fully ripen and a single bush will contain both ripened and unripe berries. The commercially used Juniper harvested for culinary purposes are the ripe berry which is blue when harvested; however, during the drying process the berry turns black.

The Juniper shrub is a relatively low maintenance plant and is adaptable to most conditions. In order to produce berries you must plant both a female and a male Juniper plant. The berry is often a food source for animals including livestock. The Juniper berry is most often made into oil which contains the highest degree of uses.

A tea can be made from the oil by adding 1 ounce Juniper oil to 1 pint of boiling water and can be taken over the course of 24 hours.

Juniper Tea Benefits

Juniper berries are often used for culinary purpose and is an ingredient in most pickling processes.

Juniper tea is often used as a diuretic but must not be used for kidney infection or disease. The use of Juniper may cause the urine smell of violets.

Juniper berries can be chewed to relieve gum and inflammation and infection.

The essential oil of Juniper is often used in aromatherapy to aid in relaxation and sleep.

Juniper Folklore

In folklore a Juniper bush can be planted beside the front door of your home to prevent witches from entering. It was believed that the witch would have to correctly count the needles on the Juniper before she could enter.

Juniper Cautions

Juniper stimulates the uterus and should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Juniper can over stimulate the kidneys and should not be used by persons with kidney infection or disease.

Continuous use of Juniper is discouraged as it can lead to serious health risks including organ damage.
