Hibiscus herb, also known as Rosemallow is actually a genus with over 200 species of flowering hibiscus plants that can be found in the warmer temperate, tropical and sub-tropical places through out the world.

Many species of Hibiscus trees are grown for show as the flowers are large and vibrant and make a beautiful addition to most flower gardens.The benefits of hibiscus tea make it a popular drink in many countries through out the world.

There are perennial hibiscus plants as well as the annual variety. Growing Hibiscus is a popular hobby because of the variety of hibiscus flower colors and their large blooms. Common, red hibiscus, or hibiscus rosasinensis is the type used to make hibiscus tea.

Other species of Hibiscus are used to make paper, eaten as vegetables, used in herbal teas and other beverages and made into jellies. In Hindu worship the Hibiscus was used as an offering to the God Ganesha and the Goddess Kali. Still other species are used to ease the hair from falling out and dandruff.

Uses for Dried Hibiscus

The most commonly used Hibiscus for medicinal purposes is the species also known as Common Hibiscus, Rosasinensis, Rosella or China Rose and is generally native to the tropical regions. This is the red hibsicus, and it is dried and used to make hibiscus tea.

Hibiscus tea is prepared by steeping 1 – 2 teaspoons dried hibiscus flowers in 8 ounces of boiling water for 10 minutes.

Hibiscus Uses & Herbal Remedies

Common Hibiscus has commonly been used to treat mild fevers and is often used to treat the fever of children. It is made into a hibiscus tea that is best served warm to treat flu and cold symptoms.

Common or Red Hibiscus can be added to the bath to help ease respiratory ailments associated with colds and asthma.

Common Hibiscus can be used in lotions and salves and is thought to soften and even heal skin and can cool a burn.

Hibiscus Side Effects & Cautions

Hibiscus should be used with caution since there are many species, some may be hallucinogenic or produce and alcohol affect. Make sure you have common red hibiscus.

Hibiscus is discouraged during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
