Herbs for Insomnia

There are certain herbs for insomnia and difficulty sleeping that can really help the situation. About 33% of us suffer from some form of insomnia on a regular basis, and even more of us who experience it at some point in our lives. Herbs & Herbal Teas are are great way to break the cycle in the body and get a goods night sleep.

Many people use prescriptions and over the counter remedies for difficulty sleeping and herbal remedies can be just as effective without the side effects or addictive qualities of prescribed medications.

Here are a few things that affect your ability to get a good nights sleep:

So first off, try to get rid of any of these factors. Most difficult is stress, so you need to combat this. The easiest way to deal with stress is eliminate the cause, and if not possible, acknowledge the cause. This in it self can be a great help. Oh, and don't forget excercise! A nice walk can do wonders after dinner!

Herbal Remedies for Insomnia

Here are some common herbs to help treat insomnia once you have tackled the list above.

  • St John's Wort - This old time remedy for stress and anxiety also works wonders on insomnia! It has mild sedative effects which allow the body to relax. A nice cup of herbal tea (remeber, no caffeine!) with St. John's Wort can really help.
  • Hops - Hops has a calming and stress reducing affect as well. This can help to break the sleepless night cycle. Just a little hops added to your favorite herbal tea, like chamomile, is a great herb to try.
  • Oatstraw - Oatstraw is our third recommended herbal remedy for insomnia. It has a proven ability to help with the condition as well. Try a little added to your tea, it may just break the pattern and let you get a good nights sleep.
