Does Black Chai Tea Contain Caffeine ?

If you are wondering does black chai tea contain caffeine, you will find this article useful. There are a huge variety of chai teas on the market including black chai tea, green chai tea and traditional chai tea. Most chai teas contain caffeine unless they are decaffeinated.

Decaffeinated chai tea also contains small amounts of caffeine in most instances. Most people that search for information on caffeine content in beverages, teas and coffees are caffeine sensitive or experience ill effects from caffeine consumption. For that reason I think it is safe to assume that if you are drinking chai tea, that you are consuming caffeine.

Does Black Chai Tea Contain Caffeine?

Black Chai Tea While most teas do contain caffeine, chai tea is typically made with black tea - fully fermented tea leaves are the ingredient in black tea - and black tea has the highest concentration of caffeine of any type of tea available. Green Chai Tea also contains caffeine but at less concentrated levels. While I would love to be able to post the caffeine content in black chai tea, it would be inaccurate at best - it is dependant on the concentration of caffeine in the specific black tea used as the base for making the chai. Typically chai tea is half strong tea and half milk, so right there you are cutting the concentration of the caffeine by the incorporation of equal ratios of milk in this particular style of tea. Chai Tea also contains a number of spices such as cinnamon and cardamome and anise - these do not add caffeine to the drink. The only aspect of black chai tea that affects the caffeine is the caffeine content in the base tea used.

If you are looking to reduce your caffeine intake, there are several things you can do. You could start by buying decaffeinated black tea - while there is still caffeine in this tea it is nominal and further reduced by the addition of milk as noted above. This would give you a greatly reduced intake of caffeine when drinking the tea. If you are not able to find decaffeinated black tea, you can decaffeinate yourself. In the first steep of tea, the majority of the caffeine is released, so the second and third steeps of a good quality black tea each have a lesser amount of caffeine. Using the third steep, you will have what is considered decaffeinated black tea in the market place.

My second suggestion is to use an alternative tea as the base - but you will change the flavor of the tea, green tea has less caffeine but will give you a grassy flavor as opposed to the earthy flavor of black tea. White tea produces a very nice chai tea, but it is on the light side as it is difficult to get a strong white tea due to the tenderness of the white tea leaves. Though white tea is said to contain the most antioxidants, so you would be benefiting by the reduction of caffeine over the black chai and the green chai. White tea has the least caffeine of the traditional teas.

I hope you found this article useful and found your answer to the question - Does Black Chai Tea contain caffeine ? Thanks for reading.
