Celery Seed Herb
Celery Seed is cultivated most commonly from the dried fruit of the Apium Graveolens, a member of the parsley family and is closely related to the common garden vegetable Celery. Most Celery Seed comes to us from India, China and France with the most flavorsome from India.
Celery Seed and table Celery are adapted from a wild variety known as Smallage which was used by the Greeks and Romans for its medicinal properties. Celery Seed’s medicinal properties are used to treat high blood pressure, relieve pain, and strengthen the nervous system.
The Celery Seed sold in stores for culinary use is what is used as spice and medicinally and should not be confused with Celery Seed sold for cultivation. Celery Seed for cultivation should not be consumed as it is usually treated with a fungicide.
Celery Seed Tea
A tea can be prepared from Celery Seeds by steeping 1 teaspoon of freshly crushed Celery Seeds in 8 ounces of boiling water for 10 – 20 minutes. Strain before drinking.
Celery Seed Uses & Herbal Remedies
Celery Seed has been used to help treat colds and flu, as a diuretic, ease arthritis and certain blood conditions.
Celery Seeds are available and used as a whole seed, essential oil, extract and capsule and should be used as directed if taken as a supplement.
Celery Seed has been used to treat cases of high blood pressure and used as a blood thinner to prevent artery buildup.
It is believed by some that chewing Celery Seed will increase concentration.
Celery Seed Cautions
Celery Seed extract or high doses of Celery Seed should be avoided in pregnancy as it may lead to miscarriage.
High doses of Celery Seeds can cause sun sensitivity and therefore a higher SPF sunscreen may be needed.
High doses of Celery Seeds should be avoided when using other diuretics or blood thinners.
