Tea Blocks & Tea Cakes - How to break them up!
by: Teya

Thanks for the question about breaking up a brick or cake of tea.

Some teas are compressed, Pu-Erh Tea is a great example of this.

How to break up the tea cake or tea brick without damaging the tea takes some skill. You don't just tear a chunk off.

You have to ease the tea leaves apart, try to minimalize the damage to the leaves as mucha as possible.

There are tea tools to help with this, or just use an object such as a letter opener to ease a layer of the compressed tea.

We have a great reference page and video that shows you how to break up compressed tea here.

As you can see from the video, easing the tea leaves apart without breaking them is the trick. It is a little time consuming, but well worth the effort.

Hope this helps and good luck.
