Lots of people wonder where the acai berries come from and if they can buy an acai berry plant for their own garden or yard.
Well, hate to say, but the answer is ‘no’ unless you live in a tropical climate…..
The acai berries actually come from the acai palm. A palm tree that is native to certain parts of South America and has not only been used as a food source in those countries for 1000’s of years, but the palm leaves were just as important, being used as roofing material.
The berries of the acai palm are a great food source and grow in large clusters, similar to that of a grape cluster, but much larger in size.
The acai palms grow to a height of 15 to 30 meters which makes harvesting the berries a little difficult. The smooth palm trunks have to be climbed by a skilled acai berry harvester and then the berries are picked.
So, as much as we would all like an acai berry palm or plant in our yards, so we can grow our own acai berries, it is not a likely event for most of us.
We will have to rely on others to get these nutritious berries.
